Summer course for Ukraine

08.07.2022 / Attention!

The Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University will provide free Czech language classes to almost three hundred Ukrainian citizens. This will be made possible by a financial donation from the J&T Foundation aimed at supporting people affected by the war in Ukraine. We are convinced that the knowledge of language is a primary tool of integration, protects people against isolation and social exclusion, and enables them to establish relationships, find jobs and pursue their education. Therefore, by teaching the language we want to support all those who are currently facing adversity. Thanks to this cooperation, we are opening groups for crash courses, morning and evening courses, intensive courses and summer schools.
Scholarship support covers the cost of classes and teaching materials but does not cover living expenses or accommodation costs.

Ukrainian students will receive support to study in Czech preparatory programmes

29.06.2022 / Attention!

A total of 75 young people from among Ukrainian refugees will have the opportunity to prepare for studies at Czech universities free of charge in the annual courses of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University. The Kellner Family Foundation decided to support their education. The contract for the donation of CZK 9.2 million was signed by Milena Králíčková, Rector of Charles University, and Renáta Kellnerová, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Kellner Family Foundation.

The grant is open to students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, who can apply until 31 July. In the preparatory programme of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, which starts on 5 September, the students will master the Czech language to the level necessary to enter university within a year. Experienced teachers at the institute will prepare them not only for the entrance exams but also for their future studies.

Na společné podpoře vzdělávání mladých lidí z Ukrajiny udílením grantů se dohodly ředitelka ÚJOP UK Dana Hůlková Nývltová a Petra Dobešová, členka správní rady Nadace The Kellner Family Foundation (vpravo).

Foto:Dana Hůlková Nývltová, Director of ILPS CU, and Petra Dobešová, a member of the Foundation´s Board of Trustees (right), agreed to work together to support the education of young people from Ukraine by awarding grants.

Director of ILPS CU, Dana Hůlková Nývltová, said: "We are very keen to support high school graduates from Ukraine so that they can study in the Czech Republic. We see this as a beneficial support for Ukraine, especially in the medium term, as it takes time to graduate, but also in terms of short-term support for the upcoming period, when students will get the background and quiet for their studies. We believe that this will serve as a boost for Ukraine."

A member of the Foundation´s Board of Trustees, Petra Dobešová, said: "It was a completely natural decision for us to support education and help children and young people from Ukraine. Education is the main theme of all projects of The Kellner Family Foundation. For young people from Ukraine, knowledge of the Czech language is the first and necessary step towards quick integration into Czech society. And the courses of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies will help them to master both the Czech language and the entrance exams to the university of their choice."

The training of Ukrainian scholarship holders will focus on four fields of university study: humanities, economics, engineering and science/medicine. The total of 1,215 hours of classes include seminars, lectures and comprehensive study assignments, supplemented by the possibility of individual consultations with teachers. Students have the opportunity to regularly monitor their progress in their studies and, upon successful completion of the final exams, they receive a certificate that is accepted in the admission procedure by most faculties of Czech universities.

The Kellner Family Foundation
The Kellner Family Foundation was established by Renáta and Petr Kellner with the aim to support long-term educational projects for elementary school pupils and their teachers, high school and university students. The Foundation seeks out and supports motivated children and young people who grow up in conditions that make it difficult or impossible for them to access quality education. Annually, the Foundation grants around 90 million CZK to charitable projects.

The International Conference of Foreign Students of Czech knows the winners. The best translator is

13.05.2022 / Attention!

In the seventh year of the translation and presentation competition, the students of Charles University again won the first place in the category of presentations. The event is organized by the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University together with the Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic within the International Conference of Foreign Students of Czech.

The European Commission's professional translators evaluated almost thirty translations of a competition text, which was written by Filip Noubel. The editor-in-chief of the Global Voices portal focused on the history of the television programme Večerníček. Competitors translated to Czech from a total of twelve languages.

"Choosing the best translations was not easy. The high and balanced quality of the submitted texts surprised us and showed that Czech as a foreign language is taught at the highest level not only in the Czech Republic but also at a number of universities abroad," says Martin Stašek from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation.

"This year, when the Czech Republic is going to take over the EU presidency, the international dimension of the competition is gaining new significance. I believe in Europe and the importance of learning the so-called 'small languages', because it contributes to mutual understanding. This is evidenced by the fact that this year's competitors include representatives of the northernmost and southernmost countries of the European Union – Sweden and Greece," says Dana Hůlková Nývltová, Director of the Institute, about the importance of the conference and competition.

The students' skills were also compared in a competition of 17 presentations, in which students from six European and several non-European countries took part. The winner of the thematic round was Lucas Daniel Breheret (Germany) with the presentation "My Hobby in Germany". David Minnivaliev (Russia) won the highest award for the presentation "Intervertebral Disc Prolapse".

The International Conference of Foreign Students of Czech has been organized by the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, Charles University, in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic, since 2016. It has two parts. The first part consists of a competition of presentations focused on hobby or professional topics and a translation competition, and the second, non-competitive part, consists of professional language and translation seminars and workshops. Along with diplomas, the competition winners received prizes such as tablets, readers and other.

The competition is held under the auspices of PhDr. Dana Hůlková Nývltová, Ph.D., ILPS CU Director. At this year's conference, there were lectures by, for example, doc. Petr Janeček from the Institute of Ethnology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and Mgr. Martin Svášek, Ph.D. from the European Commission.

The ILPS Director awarded the effort to help refugees

10.05.2022 / Attention!

On Monday, 25 April, student Vladyslav Zlochevskyi received an award for volunteer activities from the Institute Director Dana Hůlková Nývltová. The teachers of free Czech courses for Ukrainian refugees received honourable mentions.

The awarded Ukrainian student helped the colleagues at the Poděbrady Study Centre as a translator and assistant in the organization of the language courses as well as during the lessons. He talked to his Czech colleagues about the culture of his homeland, and he also shared his experience of living in the Czech Republic with the refugees. They were (and still are) asking him many questions.

Awarded teachers Michaela Straková Tomášová, Kateřina Pokorná, Lukáš Vaňous, Kateřina Vodičková and Zuzana Janíková voluntarily participated in the lessons for Ukrainian refugees. The initiative of free Czech language lessons for refugees was established at the Poděbrady Centre at the beginning of the military conflict. Thanks to the cooperation with the town council, it was possible to include Ukrainian teachers who teach small children in the course. The course was also attended by a Ukrainian doctor.

The first Ukrainian free movers began preparing to study in Czech

26.04.2022 / Courses

The first Ukrainian free movers began preparing to study in Czech at our study centre in Prague. The Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies has prepared an intensive Czech language course for them, which includes 25 hours per week plus controlled study in applications.

"We have opened the first study groups for students from nine different faculties at Charles University and more will follow in the coming weeks. We focus the groups according to which faculties the students come from and what types of programmes they are preparing for. Due to the number of students, we were able to create a special class for the Faculty of Social Sciences, but Ukrainian free movers are also preparing to study at the Faculty of Arts, Science, Mathematics and Physics, and other faculties," said Petra Landergott Kalvínská, head of the ILPS CU study centre in Prague.

The first two Czech language courses started on Monday 25 April; in a week's time, Ukrainian students at the medical faculties of our University will start studying at the centre. Students have the opportunity to continue intensive language courses until September. Ukrainian free movers can apply to Czech universities and continue their studies in the Czech Republic at individual universities from October.

How does non-contact teaching look like at ILPS CU?

11.08.2021 / Courses

TEACHING FROM SEPTEMBER 2021 – IN PERSON OR ONLINE
WE ARE WITH YOU!

Dear students,

We are happy that you have chosen the Czech Republic for your further studies at university and your first steps will be directed to the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, Charles University.

The global pandemic of coronavirus affected the plans of all foreign (and Czech) students; however, the situation in the Czech Republic has gradually stabilized and is beginning to return to normal. At ILPS CU, we are therefore all ready to start teaching according to the planned schedule at the beginning of September 2021, both in our study centers and online.

Online teaching is implemented on the MS Teams platform, to which all our students have free access.

The platform enables audio-visual support for teaching (videos, presentations), working online in small groups, and individual consultations and chats with teachers. As an additional tool we use the LMS system Moodle and other educational tools supported by Charles University.

Many of our students have successfully completed a large part of the 2020/2021 academic year online and will be attending Czech universities in October.

Terminology:

synchronous online teaching: the lecturer and students are present at the same time in a virtual learning environment, there is direct communication between them. The teaching is very similar to the standard offline education.
e-learning: lecturers assign complex tasks to students. Students work on assignments at their own pace and according to their own time schedule. These are video presentations, texts, work in applications and other types of tasks, to which students then receive feedback.

Frequently asked questions about online teaching:

1) Is it sufficient preparation for university?

  • Online teaching is only part of the preparatory course. Some students will start in person from September, others will start with distant learning and join full-time teaching in person during the first semester (depending on the visa process). Some students complete the entire winter semester online as part of the Combined Program.
  • As part of online teaching, all language skills (including speaking) are developed, grammar explanations and pronunciation practice take place.
  • As part of their specialization, students will learn Czech professional terminology and expand knowledge in their field.
  • We also focus on realia: we provide information about life in the Czech Republic, its culture, history, and society using authentic materials.

2) So do you recommend taking the entire preparatory course online?

  • Not really – although online teaching is of very high quality, we cannot fully substitute the environment in the Czech Republic, where you will encounter Czech at virtually every step (not only in lessons). As soon as you receive the visa, inform your study officer and she will send you further instructions on how to proceed.
  • By default, this is not even possible. We do not offer the entire preparatory course via distant form. However, as in the previous academic year, we are able to adapt the way of teaching to the current situation.

3) What is the teaching schedule?

  • Online teaching consists of a combination of synchronous teaching (most lessons) and contactless e-learning (guided self-study in the form of video presentations, work with texts, videos or worksheets), which is a useful component of the program preparing students for work at university.
  • Controlled work with texts and listening, building skills for note making, creating CVs, annotations – you will greatly appreciate during further studies at the university.
  • Practicing writing with detailed feedback.
  • Regular tests verify the achieved knowledge of students and provide feedback on the achieved results.

4) What are the main specifics of online teaching at ILPS CU?

  • This is not a separate online course, but a variant of the year-long preparatory course, which will lead you to a smooth entry into the full-time form of teaching.
  • The system of distance education at ILPS CU has been developed by professional methodologists and experienced teachers.
  • We have a sophisticated syllabus and teaching schedule.
  • We provide students with individual study support.
  • We provide methodological guidance and full support to teachers.
  • We regularly monitor students' progress.
  • We use modern teaching methods and techniques (flipped classroom, mind mapping, adaptive learning).
  • We use educational applications (Learning Apps, Quizlet, Kahoot, etc.)

5) Will I not be left alone for everything?

  • You don't have to worry. We will never leave you alone! Throughout online teaching, students are methodically guided and supported by their teachers.
  • We will regularly monitor your teaching progress.

6) Do you monitor attendance when classes are initially online?

7) How can I practice speaking and pronunciation when the lessons will be online?

  • Pronunciation lessons with specialized materials take place as part of the online course.

8) What platforms and methods do you use for teaching?

  • MS Teams (communication tool for non-contact teaching – classes, online lessons, tests, assignments, presentations, videos, etc.).
  • Moodle (LMS system).
  • Zoom (online meetings, webinars, conferences).
  • Other tools with CU support.
  • Teaching is done by professional instructors fully trained to teach online.

9) Will standard technical equipment be enough for me?

  • Yes, a standard PC with Windows, a microphone and a webcam, and a stable internet connection is sufficient (see requirements for MS Teams).
  • Every ILPS CU student has access to MS Teams and our full support. In addition, each student will be trained to work with the MS Teams platform.

10) Can I take part in online lessons even though I am not a "technical type"?

  • You will have our full support throughout the course (you can contact us with any questions). You will be in daily contact with your teacher. In addition, each student will be trained to work with the MS Teams platform.

11) Can you send me some sample from current online teaching?
Below you can see an image from MS Teams and images from non-contact teaching (lessons of czech language and chemistry).

  • HERE you can play an audio recording from the czech language lesson
  • HERE you can play a recording from a mathematics lesson (circle)
  • HERE you can play a recording from a mathematics lesson (binomial theorem)

Methodology: What we learned from online for regular "offline" teaching

15.06.2021 / Courses

Teaching a language online requires mastering the tools that enable interaction, monitoring students' work, effective and quick evaluation, and also livening it up and having a bit of fun. How to combine attractive packaging and quality content? The answer to this question was offered to Czech teachers by this year's Methodological Symposium, which focused on teaching grammar and pronunciation in Czech for foreigners.

The seminars, intended for the Czech Centres employees and teachers of foreign Czech study workplaces, focused on three key topics: phonetics, grammar, and online teaching. In working groups, the course participants, led by experts, worked together to explore how aspects of online teaching can enrich further classroom instruction, and how to build effectively on what they learned in the online environment last year.

"It was beneficial to find out that we came to a similar use of the online environment in teaching independently, and I am glad to be inspired by the possibilities of using applications and games that I did not know," said Elena Bartošová from the Czech School in Madrid.

The Methodological Symposium was held online for the second time and this year the number of presenting lecturers from IPLS CU was expanded by personalities from other institutions dealing with Czech for foreigners, such as the Institute of Czech Studies of Charles University. For lecturers from more distant destinations, the Methodological and Professional Centre has also expanded the offer of courses with the online Malé metodické léto ("Little Methodological Summer", 5th and 6th September) and the semester course SMEČ (from October 2021), for which you can still register.

Zkoušky z češtiny CCE obhájily srovnatelnou kvalitu s testy CAE

16.02.2021 / Czech Language Certificate Exam

Poprvé jsme uspěli v roce 2009 a od té doby naše členství v ALTE zaručuje zájemcům vysokou kvalitu zkoušky a mezinárodní platnost certifikátu," uvádí PhDr. Pavel Pečený, Ph.D., vedoucí Výzkumného a testovacího centra ÚJOP UK.

Asociace jazykových zkušebních institucí v Evropě (ALTE – The Association of Language Testers in Europe) vznikla v roce 1989 a v současné době má 33 plnoprávných členů.

Saint Petersburg State University is the cofounder and the Russian Federation’s first representative

16.12.2020 / Attention!

Saint Petersburg State University is the cofounder and the Russian Federation’s first representative in the Global MOOC Alliance.

Saint Petersburg State University is the cofounder and the Russian Federation’s first representative in the Global MOOC Alliance. The creation of the Alliance was first mentioned at the World online conference “Learning Revolution and Higher Education Conference” that was held in Beijing on 9 - 11th of December, 2020.

The Global MOOC Alliance - is the non-profit partnership of universities, online educational platforms, and international public organizations. The initiative of the Alliance creation belongs to the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) and the Tsinghua University of China. Participation of SPBU in the institution of the Global MOOC Alliance is a great honor for the University, and it means the global recognition of the SPBU achievements in the development of online education.

Founders of the Global MOOC Alliance are: the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE), the Tsinghua University of China, three major online educational platforms — XuetangX, Thai MOOC and edX, and universities developing and exploiting massive open online courses.

XuetangX is the Chinese national online educational platform that is the biggest in the world, and where more than 3100 online courses with more than 228 million listeners are placed. edX is one of the biggest global online open-source platforms founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in May 2012. Nowadays, it has more than 2800 online courses with an audience of 100 million listeners. Learning management systems, based on the open-source platform solution base Open edX, are very popular and are used to support the educational process. SPBU’s online educational platform open.sbpu.ru is also based on the Open edX technology base. Thai MOOC is the Thailand Cyber University (Thaicyberu, TCU) project that gathered more than 100 partners and presented 472 online courses.

Universities presented in the Global MOOC Alliance are the leaders in their regions. Thus, Cornell University (USA), being a member of the Ivy League, is one of the most famous USA universities. Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) is in 11th place in the world and 3rd place in Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2020. Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI) took 16th place among all technical universities in the world according to the Top Universities rating, made by the Times Higher Education. Now POLIMI is in 2nd place among European partner universities of the Coursera platform by the number of its online courses. University of Nairobi (Kenya) (in top-10 African universities) is the online education leader in the African region and the initiator of the African online platform creation. University of Toronto (Canada) is the leader in higher education in Canada according to Times; online course of the University “Mind Control: Managing Your Mental Health During COVID-19, presented on the biggest worldwide online platform Coursera, is one of the most popular online courses in Canada (almost 140 000 people signed up for the course), and it's another online course on Coursera “Programming basics” is in top-100 courses of 2020 (more than 220 000 signed up for the course).

Nikolay Kropachev, the rector of Saint Petersburg State University, addressed participants of the first Global MOOC Alliance online conference with a welcome speech. Among others, he described the SPBU experience in the online education development before the COVID-10 pandemic and after its beginning, when SPBU could efficiently adapt to the new conditions and remain the teaching quality at the highest level. Rector mentioned the main conclusions formulated in SPBU under the pandemic conditions.

“In the context of the pandemic, the educational process with the use of information and communication technologies allows, on the one hand, to use the knowledge, experience, talent, and creative potential of teachers, and, on the other hand, to implement achievements of the informatization into the educational activity. The digital format doesn’t disclaim the quality of University education. Developed as a result of the pandemic situation in the world showed how much the academic community needs cooperation.” The academic community needs to develop national and international cooperation, an insufficient level of which was highlighted by the pandemic. In matters of online education, the consolidation of efforts is needed. That's the reason why we decided to join the Global MOOC Alliance, the organization that, without a doubt, will become a center of cooperation and distribution of advanced teaching practices.", - Nikolay Kropachev said.

He also noted that SPBU has been cooperating with China for a long time: among SPBU partners there are more than 50 organizations from the People’s Republic of China and 30 companies with Chinese capitals. In the list of SPBU partners are the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People’s Republic of China, the Tsinghua University of China (THU), Peking University, Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), technology company Huawei and other organizations. “I’m sure the Global MOOC Alliance will become an effective platform for our further cooperation with Chinese partners, and no external factors, including pandemic, will be able to slow it down”, — the rector of SPBU added.

Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China Chen Baosheng, while performing at the conference, noted that PRC today is the world leader by the number of MOOCs. He informed that China has more than 30 major online platforms with access to 34 thousand online courses. Almost 450 million learners listen to these courses, and now it’s the most numerous online course auditorium in the world. Chen Baosheng highlighted that one of the purposes of the Global MOOC Alliance’s creation is to enhance opportunities for access to Chinese educational products. “ We created the Global MOOC Alliance to improve the quality of our courses and to give learners all over the world access to them”, — Chen Baosheng noted.

The Minister also added the Alliance’s creation was directed for increasing the level of knowledge availability and global development of continuing education that can last for a lifetime. “Education is not a privilege of classrooms and books. Arrays of knowledge from the internet that give people more educational opportunities replaced it”, — Chen Baosheng marked.

One of the initiators of the Global MOOC Alliance’s creation and the conference organization is Tsinghua University that is SPBU’s longtime partner. Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong, performing at the conference, marked that modern educational organizations need to develop the principle of openness. “Greater openness will help us to overcome physical and technological borders and cultural differences and will allow us to share educational resources of better quality with learners all over the world in a more efficient and easier way. Universities with greater openness will achieve equal opportunities in education faster than they did before, they will develop continuing education and will promote cooperation and exchanges with more inclusiveness and more broad vision”, — Qiu Yong highlighted.

Assistant UNESCO Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini in her welcome speech to the conference participants also noted the importance of online education development for increasing access to knowledge. She highlighted that principles of inclusion, equality, and quality must come to the fore, and every educational platform or resource has to follow these principles.

At the same time, she noted the education can’t go online completely and pandemic, surprisingly, proved it. “Let’s be honest: we learned one important lesson from a pandemic — a learner needs his teacher. Cooperation between people and live communication is still the basis of the educational process. We have to develop a new relationship type: between technologies, teachers, and learners, to avoid the digital “gap” and not to fall out of modernity. Teachers have to develop their professional skills in this direction, find new ways to fight these challenges” — Stefania Giannini emphasized.

All Global Alliance participants supported the adoption of the 2020 Beijing Declaration on MOOC Development. Note that SPBU is rightfully considered as the leader in the online education sphere: SPBU is one of the founders of the Russian online platform “Open Education” and takes 1st place by the number of courses posted there — 146 courses out of 663. Platform audience — 7 million people, almost 2 million of them are SPBU online courses’ listeners.

Besides that, University today takes 1st place among all European universities and 3rd place in the world (after Google Cloud (USA) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA)) by the number of online courses posted on the international educational platform Coursera. Two years ago, SPBU became the first and still the only Russian university, whose online courses are posted on the Chinese largest platform XuetangX.

For information:

One of the purposes of the Global MOOC Alliance is to build a global community interested in the exchange of educational resources of the highest quality. The Alliance will promote MOOCs and best teaching practices in online education and develop international cooperation of leaders in the sphere of innovative educational technologies. The Alliance’s work will focus on the realization of one key purpose of the UN-defined global sustainable development  — ensuring education’s equality and accessibility and providing opportunities for continuing education.

only the following shops remain open: groceries, drugstores, pharmacies, household goods or newsagents.
services are closed - hairdressers, manicures, pedicures, massages, etc.

wearing face masks is still required in settlements if the distance between people is less than 2 meters with an exception for members of the same household.
Don't worry, we will certainly handle the situation well if you follow the above rules!
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact your class teachers, study centre directors and study departments any time. We will all be at your disposal!
Stay well and safe and maintain a good mood because it also supports our health!

Measures for life in dormitories

14.10.2020 / Attention!

Dear students,

Due to the deteriorating epidemiological situation, we are announcing measures for life in dormitories.

• Use disinfection when entering the dormitory and common areas, especially when entering kitchens, lifts, and study rooms.
• Wear face masks in lifts, corridors, and other common areas.
• The number of people being together in common rooms is limited to six. Please observe this number and be considerate of each other (e.g., so that everyone can take turns in the kitchens).
• The same restriction applies in front of the dormitory and outdoors: do not gather in larger groups, always up to a maximum of 6 people.
• Do not organize parties, do not drink from shared glasses or bottles, do not shout, do not sing – these are critical moments when the infection spreads easily.
• If you are not well and/or go for a covid test, report it immediately to the study department or the centre management (until receiving the test result, we must limit cleaning, dispose of waste in a specific way and after quarantine, wash the bed linen in a special laundry).

Thank you for following all the rules and please keep cool, make sure you eat healthily, exercise and walk in the open air, have enough sleep. Be in a good mood and strengthen your immunity (take vitamins C and D).

The new government regulation

14.10.2020 / Attention!

Dear students,

in connection with the tightening measures against the spread of coronavirus, we will continue to implement distance learning in all ILPS CU courses and programmes. In the distance mode, you can also consult your teachers, and contact the study department or the centre management in case of any questions or ambiguities.

The new government regulation includes the following points:
• Face masks are still mandatory in enclosed spaces, means of transport and, as a new measure, at public transport stops.
• Restaurants only provide takeaway food until 8 pm.
• Gathering is allowed in a maximum of 6 people.
• It is possible to enter and move around shops and shopping centres only in groups of 2 and keep a distance of at least 2 meters.
• All mass events have been cancelled (theatre, cinema, disco, sports, worship, etc.).
• It is forbidden to drink alcohol in public.

Please be patient, disciplined and respect all restrictions. Keep them in the dormitories and in contact with your roommates and friends.

Use the time you gain as a result of these measures not only to study, but also to relax, walk outdoors, read, follow the news from the world of film or relax playing online games. Meet others, family and friends via video conference. Despite the limitations, do not forget to learn new things, experience joy and laugh.

See you in Teams,
your ILPS CU

Relocation of language courses from Albertov to Voršilská

22.06.2020 / Attention!

Dear friends,

a large number of changes await us: the first big change is the relocation of language courses for foreigners from Prague-Albertov Centre to Voršilská.

On 12th June 2020, for the first time in history, students of our language courses (Czech language courses for foreigners) received their certificates in the former chapel of the Arnošt of Pardubice dormitory building (Voršilská 1). It was the last year of students that studied in our almost 100-year-old building in Albertov.

However, we are definitely not ending; on the contrary, we are starting a new chapter and from July we are looking forward to seeing you in new and better premises, where we will transfer the tradition of quality teaching and the rich cultural life of the Centre.

The old Centre building has reached the end of its service life and we are looking forward to seeing you in the new premises with even more enthusiasm from 7th July!

Come and see us at Voršilská 1 in Prague 1, near the National Theatre and Václav Havel Library.

Study Czech and become a member of the Albertov Friends Club.

We say goodbye to your from Albertov, but TAKE NOTE - WE ARE NOT ENDING - WE CONTINUTE AT A NEW ADDRESS :-)

From now on, you can ask your questions about studying Czech language courses for foreigners at: vorsilska@ujop.cuni.cz

Albertov offices are temporarily closed

Final Czech language exam results

05.06.2020 / Courses

Last week saw the final Czech language exam. The final examinations took place at the centres that specialize in yearly preparatory programmes.

Although the course of the exam this year was not traditional and accompanied by many extraordinary measures in connection with the Covid-19 epidemic, everything turned out well.

The exam was adapted to the circumstances (for example, testing in small groups); however, it remained at the required level and all language skills were tested.

The students did not have it easy this year, but thanks to detailed preparatory materials and the perfect support of the teachers, they managed everything.

Overall, almost 88% of students passed the Czech language exam (of which, 68% at B2 level and 20% at B1 level).
The result is thus comparable to last year, which confirms the effectiveness of the non-contact teaching concept, which ILPS CU introduced in the emergency situation.

Students who have not been successful, or want to improve their result, have the option of a re-take date in June.

Q-Mark - What does it mean?

26.05.2020 / Exams

Each language exam that has passed the ALTE audit - The Association of Language Testers in Europe will receive the Q quality mark for five years.

You could find ours on the title page of each CCE exam.

ATTENTION! Deadline for submitting applications extended until 31.5.2020

15.05.2020 / Attention!

Dear students, we have extended the deadline for submitting applications for all preparatory courses (for capacity reasons, we no longer accept applications for SJOP Liberec) for the academic year 2020/2021 (i.e. preparatory courses starting in September 2020) until 31.5.2020.

For applications submitted after this date, the possibility of acceptance will be assessed individually. However, we can no longer guarantee acceptance of an application after this date.

Unfortunately, the acceptance of applications from students from the Russian Federation cannot be resumed due to the closure of consulates in the Russian Federation in March, before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the exhaustion of interview dates. Applications (assessed positively) submitted from states where consulates have been long overloaded might not be accepted either. These students would not be able to start their studies on time. After sending the application, you will be informed by the study officer about the possibility of acceptance/non-acceptance.

It still applies that EU students can apply until 31.8.2020.

PLEASE NOTE! Acceptance of applications for courses of the academic year 2021/2022 (courses from September 2021) will start in July. Follow current information here on the web or on social networks (FB, Instagram)

We look forward to seeing you at our courses in September 2020 and September 2021!

Information about the start of academic year 2020/2021

15.05.2020 / Attention!

Dear future students,
The global coronavirus epidemic has affected your plans to study in the Czech Republic. After the initial shock and the rapid development of events, the situation has stabilized and life in the Czech Republic is gradually beginning to return to normal. Relaxing of some measures is possible due to the positive development of the spread of the epidemic and the low number of the infected. Therefore, we would like to provide you with information about the start of academic year 2020/2021 and the beginning of your studies.

At the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, Charles University, we are all ready to start teaching according to the planned schedule at the beginning of September 2020, both in person at the study centre and, if necessary, using non-contact teaching.

At the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, our team of professional methodologists and experienced teachers managed to switch very quickly and efficiently to the non-contact form of teaching. For two months now, we have been using the MS Teams platform, to which ILPS CU students have free access and which allows us to use audio-visual teaching support (videos, presentations), work in small groups, or individual consultations and chat with teachers. As an additional tool we have been using the LMS system Moodle and other educational tools supported by CU. Non-contact teaching at the centres has been fully implemented and with high quality. Current students are thus diligently preparing for their final exams and exams for admission to universities.

Residence permits and arrivals
In the following days and months, we will do our best to support you in obtaining your residence permit in the Czech Republic. Please get acquainted with the following groups based on the stages of the visa process and place yourself into one of them.  Studies: we count on your arrival and studies according to the academic year schedule from 7th September 2020.

 Visa: wait for the report on the decision of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic on granting/not granting your visa.
 Studies: we assume that you will receive the visa by the beginning of September, and we therefore count on your arrival and studies according to the academic year schedule from 7th September 2020.

3. My interview was to have taken place during the emergency.
 Visa: follow the webpage of your consulate for information on how the interviews will be resumed.
 Studies: we count on your arrival and studies according to the academic year schedule from 7th September 2020. In case you miss this date, we will provide you with non-contact teaching in full until your late arrival, so that you do not miss any subject matter.

The epidemiological situation in Europe is developing well at the moment, so we are already looking forward to starting another academic year. Nevertheless, please take into account that a 14-day quarantine may be required upon arrival, which you will spend in our dormitories if you have booked accommodation with us. Non-contact teaching will be provided during the quarantine period.

Please note that the above is for information only. We are not responsible for the conduct of the visa procedure and we cannot influence it. We try to share information with you as soon as we can, but we will not know the answer to many of your questions.

We wish you good health and patience.

We look forward to meeting you in person in September and helping you realize your plans for further studies at a Czech university.

Weakening of the anti-epidemic measures

11.05.2020 / Attention!

Another wave of weakening the anti-epidemic measures related to the coronavirus pandemic has started today. Shopping centers have been opened in compliance with strict hygiene rules. Wedding ceremonies, church services and other mass events for up to 100 people are allowed. Theaters, concert halls, cinemas and other similar facilities will be open, always with the participation of not more than 100 people. The outdoor seating in restaurants will open. Galleries, museums and exhibition halls will be open to visitors. The capacity of study groups at universities is increasing to a total of 15 people. ILPS CU students have been informed by their class teachers about possible lessons, consultations.

CCE is recognized by almost all universities in the Czech Republic

05.05.2020 / Exams

There are 26 public universities in the Czech Republic, of which 23 require proof of knowledge of Czech during the admission procedure for foreign students (at least at some of the faculties).

Of these, the CCE is recognized by all but four universities, which organize their own Czech language exams for foreigners as part of the admission procedure (CULS, VŠE – University of Economics, Prague, VŠPJ - The College of Polytechnics Jihlava, and VŠTE - The Institute of Technology and Business, České Budějovice).

Except these four universities, the CCE is recognized by all faculties of public universities in the Czech Republic which require foreign students to provide some proof of knowledge of the Czech language.

You can find a complete list of universities which recognize CCE here.

Choose from levels A1-C1 and enrol here.

ATTENTION! Students and graduates of full-time Czech language courses organized by ILPS CU are entitled to a discount!

State of emergency extended

29.04.2020 / Attention!

On Tuesday 28th April, the Chamber of Deputies decided to extend the state of emergency until 17th May, mainly in order to maintain a number of restrictive measures and a timetable for their gradual relaxing.

In particular, the possibility to continue "prohibiting or restricting the operation of shopping centres, swimming pools, spa facilities, public transport, all types of medical facilities, social services facilities and ordering them to use hygiene measures. Furthermore, the obligation to use personal protective equipment and disinfectants. To regulate mass events, limit their scope."

Up-to-date information on the gradual relaxing of measures can be found on the website of the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, under the link here.

Gradual relaxing of anti-coronavirus measures

24.04.2020 / Attention!

Thanks to the favorable development of the epidemiological situation in the Czech Republic, the government has relaxed some quarantine measures from today. These include, for example, the free movement of people.

Let's do them by numbers :-)

1 – THE FACEMASK REMAINS NUMBER 1 IN PROTECTION AGAINST THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS!
Keep it with you at all times and use it when moving in public
(Except for athletes up to 10 people and keeping a distance of 2 metres).
2 – always keep a distance of 2 metres when outside
3 – three dance rules still apply: keep your distance, wash your hands, and dance – good mood never hurts!
5 – a maximum of five students may be present at a consultation or examination
10 – outdoors, on the street, in the countryside, and during sports we can move in groups of up to 10 people
15 – religious services can be held with a maximum of 15 people

Enjoy the sun and being outside, but always protect yourself and take care of yourself and your surroundings.

More information can be found on the official website of the Government of the Czech Republic.

Chances of admission to universities in 2020

23.04.2020 / Attention!

Here are some statistics and forecasts of admission to universities in the Czech Republic.

Under normal circumstances, our students would only have the last few days left until the university entrance exams. This year, however, everything is different due to coronavirus.

Universities are starting to open and entrance exams will not start until 15 days after the opening of universities. Some faculties have already cancelled or rescheduled the previously mentioned dates of entrance examinations. Others are waiting for the situation to develop. Detailed information can be found on the website of a specific faculty and at the study departments of universities.

What are the chances of admission this year?

This year, as in the previous year, most applicants who take part in the admission procedure were born at a time of low birth rates, which means that there are fewer applicants than usual, and therefore the chances of admission to the chosen university are relatively high, as the number of students that universities accept has practically not decreased.

According to the Ministry of Education, in the academic year 2019/2020, a record 84% of more than 90,000 applicants entered public universities. 10 years ago, the success rate in the admission procedure was somewhere around 77%, and at the beginning of the century, a maximum of every second applicant got to university.

Of course, there are fields that are almost impossible to get into without quality preparation. The chances of being accepted into popular fields have not changed. As before, no more than one-third of students will be accepted to them.

So, which fields are currently the most sought after and at the same time the most difficult to get into?

It is usually not easy to pass the entrance exams for Medicine. Last year, only between 22% and 39% of applicants got into the medical faculties of Charles University (there are 5 of them) and it was no better anywhere else. In Brno, 27% of applicants were accepted, in Ostrava 31%, and in Olomouc only 23%.

We are therefore very proud that students who successfully complete our preparatory courses in Mariánské Lázně have a higher success rate in this comparison. You can view the success statistics on our website.

The success rate of applicants at the philosophical faculties of large public universities is usually between 38% and 47%. An exception is the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, where 66% of applicants were accepted last year.

At the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, psychology, English language and English studies in combination with American studies are among the most sought-after fields. Applicants for law studies should be prepared for the fact that law schools do not open their door to everyone either. Last year, Charles University accepted only 27% of applicants, and Palacký University in Olomouc 41%.

Pedagogy is also a popular field. The success rate of accepting future teachers at most faculties of education is between 40% and 53%.

You can prepare for successful completion of the entrance exams for the humanities in our Poděbrady centre.

Traditionally, the most selective universities are the artistic ones, where talent exams are usually taken. For example, at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU), a candidate usually gets to the third attempt. The average success rate of admission to individual AMU faculties ranges from 15% to 39%.

Even fine artists are no better off: last year they only took 18% of applicants at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, and the success rate at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design is only around 12%. In the case of art schools, it is therefore useful to apply to a private school as well, where the chances of admission are several times higher.

Preparation for artistic disciplines is offered (for Slavs) by Prague-Krystal centre.

Farmers, naturalists and technicians are welcome

As for economics, until 2013 it enjoyed very high interest from Czech students. However, it is now one of the less sought-after fields. The number of applications is declining and the chances of acceptance are increasing. In the last few years, the success rate of applicants for studies at the University of Economics in Prague has always exceeded 50%; last year they even accepted 65% of applicants.

We will prepare you for economic fields in Prague-Hostivař and Poděbrady centres.

Students also have a great chance of success at the faculties of agriculture, forestry and theology (success rates are higher than 70%). Similarly, faculties of science usually accept about 70% of applicants.

Technical universities are also a relatively accessible choice for students. However, being accepted does not always mean graduating. Last year, 75% of applicants were accepted to the Czech Technical University in Prague, 84% to the Technical University of Liberec, and 76% to the Brno University of Technology. On the other hand, technical fields are among those that a large part of students do not complete. The so-called "mortality rate" is high in the first year (sometimes up to half of those enrolled drop out). Therefore, acceptance is really just the beginning.

Our experts in Prague-Hostivař, Liberec, and Poděbrady centres will help you with the preparation (not only) for the entrance exams, but also for the first-year study of technical fields of Czech universities.

600th anniversary of King George of Poděbrady

23.04.2020 / Attention!

Once upon a time there was a king who, unlike normal practice, was not born in a royal family, but was elected king.
Never again in Czech history would the king originate from Czech nobility; King George of Poděbrady was the last one who managed to do that.

He was born in Poděbrady on 23rd April 1420. Today we commemorate his anniversary, 600 years.
But his origin is not the main reason why we remember King George today. The true reasons are his views and actions, which showed a consistent desire to find a compromise between supporters of different religions and the ability to maintain peace in the country.

In the 1460s, George's message to the rulers spread throughout Western Europe. His aim was to create a peace union of European states in which its members would have the same rights and disputes would be resolved without the use of violence: "...by the word of kings and princes, we promise that from this hour and day we will continue to show one another and maintain a pure, true, and sincere brotherhood, that for any disagreement, for any complaint, or for disputes we will not reach for weapons, nor we will allow anyone to touch them on our behalf..."

Dear friends, we wish you a lot of strength and patience in achieving your goals, to our students we wish also successful completion of the admission procedure to your chosen universities.

I sew, you sew, we sew ...

26.03.2020 / Attention!

Dear friends,

Those of you who have access to our social networks (Facebook, vk.com, Instagram) have already noticed that protective masks at ILPS are being sewn everywhere – at study centres as well as headquarters.

The Director, the Deputy Director, the heads of the centres, the curators and officers, the teachers, the methodologists, the cleaning ladies are all sewing ... and what is more, the first, who started to sew face masks and continues sewing is our building administrator, Mr Petr Lachman:-)!

THANK YOU ALL!

Many students got protective masks from us, some of them made a face mask according to the instructions on YouTube (for example, according to the instructions on the website in News from 19 March).

Let´s remind few notes about the importance of wearing face masks

• Face masks are primarily used to protect others, not you

• A face mask should only be worn for a short time (max. 2 hours) to fulfil its purpose. Cotton face masks can be reused after washing and ironing (see above)

• Wear a face mask over your mouth AND nose (only covering your mouth is not enough)

• Wear a face mask when among people (grocery shops, pharmacies, public transport, at work), not in the forest. In the countryside you should breathe fresh air to strengthen your immunity!

• Try to breathe through your nose, NOT through your mouth. The nose is a natural air filter.

You can send your questions about the situation related to teaching or enrolling to courses in the state of emergency to emergency@ujop.cuni.cz.

Obligation to wear a face mask

19.03.2020 / Attention!

" From 19 March, the Czech government has said that it is compulsory to wear a face mask or other face protection outside.
Simultaneously, only seniors over 65 years of age will be allowed to shop in grocery shops between 10:00 and 12:00."

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR WEARING FACE MASKS
1. Is wearing face masks obligatory?
Yes. As a result of government decisions, people have to cover their mouth and nose from midnight on Wednesday. So you should wear a face mask.

2. What if I don't have a face mask?
You can use a scarf or homemade face mask.

3. Where do I have to wear it?
Everywhere except for home, your own car or workplace where you don't come into contact with the public.

4. Also in shops or public transport?
Yes, even there.

5. On the street, for example, on the way to the shop?
Yes, even on the street it is mandatory.

6. What about the forest or the park?
Face masks must be worn wherever you may come into contact with others. So also in a city park. However, in a forest where no one is around, it is pointless.

7. Who will monitor wearing face masks?
Among others, it will be supervised by the city and state police.

8. What is the punishment for not wearing a face mask?
At first, only a warning. However, if you do not cover your face after the warning or break the rule repeatedly, you may be fined up to ten thousand crowns.

9. Where can I get a face mask?
Currently they are scarce. So if it is not provided by your employer or someone you know, you can sew it at home. Preferably from non-woven cotton. However, it is also possible to use a scarf.

10. How long can I wear a mask?
It is recommended two hours in a row, then you should replace it with another. However, a face mask can be scalded or washed to 60 degrees Celsius, ironed, and reused.

A few notes about possible misunderstanding of the importance of wearing face masks:
• Face masks are primarily used to protect others, not you
• A face mask should only be worn for a short time (max. 2 hours) to fulfil its purpose. Cotton face masks can be reused after washing and ironing (see above)
• Wear a face mask over your mouth AND nose (only covering your mouth is not enough)
• Wear a face mask when among people (grocery shops, pharmacies, public transport, at work), not in the forest. In the countryside you should breathe fresh air to strengthen your immunity!
• Try to breathe through your nose, NOT through your mouth. The nose is a natural air filter.

And do it with a smile, do not panic, be responsible to yourself and your surroundings!

News regarding academic year 2020/2021

17.03.2020 / Attention!

Dear friends,

let us inform you about the situation in the Czech Republic caused by the coronavirus epidemic and the preventive restrictive measures adopted by the Government of the Czech Republic, which also affect you-people interested in our courses.

https://www.vlada.cz/en/media-centrum/aktualne/due-to-the-spread-of-the-coronavirus-the-government-has-declared-a-state-of-emergency-and-on-12-march-2020-further-tightened-preventive-measures-180278/

In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, the Czech government declared a state of emergency for 30 days, with effect from 13th March 2020. One of the restrictions is the closure of national borders. At the same time, the accepting of visa applications of all types has been stopped and also the processing of the applications already filed has been suspended at all the Czech embassies abroad. At this moment it is very difficult to anticipate further events, but we strongly believe that the situation will get better by the start of the academic year 2020/21.

At this moment our students prolong their studies thanks to our professional team of teachers via contactless lessons in the form of video lectures, consultations and commented presentations. The knowledge, skills and efforts of our teachers together with years of experience in teaching Czech as a foreign language and special subjects will remain well shared and communicated this way.

We still accept online applications for the next academic year 2020/21 (except from students from Russian Federation). Study consultants from the Central Study Department accept them and stay in contact with all applicants. However, at this moment we ask all applicants to postpone thier payment for the course. As soon as the situation permits, we will renew the enrollment process.

We wish you good health and positive thinking.

CONTINUING TEACHING FROM 16 MARCH 2020

14.03.2020 / Attention!

Dear Students,

We monitor and respond to coronavirus pandemic measures. We support all preventive steps of the Government of the Czech Republic and follow the measures of the Rector of Charles University.

Our team of professional pedagogical and academic staff is preparing a system of so-called daily non-contact teaching that uses various forms of electronic teaching tools (e.g. video lectures, commented presentations, on-line consultations). Teaching at our centres starts again on Monday, 16 March, 2020. We provide maximum support to our students in order to meet their study goals. Students are asked not to underestimate their studies and communicate properly with their teachers.

A crisis team has been set up at Charles University to ensure the application of government regulations and to support students and teachers in their work. The individual workplaces of the University continue their activities, only the form of performance is adjusted towards distance activities. Dormitories operate without restrictions.

For your convenience, we have set up an e-mail address emergency@ujop.cuni.cz, where you can send your questions.

Study Centre Prague-Albertov becomes Prague-Voršilská Centre in summer

11.02.2020 / Courses

Thanks to the news from last week we realized it is time to talk about big changes that await our centre ÚJOP UK Albertov - Kurzy češtiny pro cizince.

The University canteen, which opened on 3 February, is located in the building of the former dormitory Arnošta z Pardubic, in Voršilská street, where the Centre of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University Prague-Albertov will move after the summer semester.

At the end of January, the Director of the Centre, together with representatives of the ILPS CU management, accompanied by architects, visited the reconstructed premises in which the classrooms, library, offices, kitchenettes, and toilettes will be located.
Each of our centres is named after its location. Therefore, this centre will change its official name and will enter the new academic year as the Prague-Voršilská Centre. Nevertheless, the name Albertov will not only remain in the hearts of teachers and graduates of the centre, but will also remain the name of a student club that will continue its activities in the new premises.

You too can be there (http://ujop.cuni.cz/klub-albertov). Just send an application and become our student.

Christmas "Box of Shoes"

04.12.2019 / Novinky z blogu

The spirit of true Christmas is not just at merry fairs around glittering trees, we find it in a show of mercy.

Students of the Prague-Krystal Center are well aware of this and have been participating for the second year in the Christmas event Box of Shoes. They collect gifts for children from poorer families, beautifully pack gifts into boxes and take them to Diakonie ČCE collection points (the organizer of the event). So the real holidays comes.

See more photos here.

The Prague-Krystal dormitory is after renovation!

18.11.2019 / Attention!

On Friday, 15 November, there was a grand reopening of the accommodation part of the Prague-Krystal centre after reconstruction, held by the ILPS CU management.

In the coming days, our current students will move into new, bright rooms, equipped with everything they need: shower / bath and toilet, spacious wardrobes, comfortable mattresses, comfortable work chairs, modern desk lamps with multiple lighting modes, refrigerators, blackout curtains, etc.

During reconstruction, the carpeting was removed and all floors are now covered with linoleum, which is better from (not only) the hygienic point of view.

The dormitories are now divided into colour zones – yellow, blue, green, and orange.

Each floor has a kitchen and laundry facilities. Students can study and spend their free time together in study rooms or common rooms.

You can find photographs of the new accommodation facilities at the Prague-Krystal centre photo gallery.
Accommodation prices are available on the webpages of the centre.

Do you want to become a doctor?

14.10.2019 / Courses

Each country needs doctors, that is why we are glad the amount of medics in the Czech Republic is increasing (see the news below).

ILPS CU offers Year Preparatory Course for students who plan to study Medicine (General Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy). See details here.

Apart from Czech language, students also learn biology, chemistry and physics and, if necessary, mathematics, Latin and an introduction to Logic, according to the requirements of individual faculties and fields of study.

More than 300 students enrolled in the General Medicine in Czech language this week at the Faculty of Medicine, which is part of Charles University. It's about 50 future doctors more than last year. The government supported a 15% increase in the number of students of general medicine this year by CZK 500 million, of which over 62 million went to the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen.
"For the faculty, change means, among other things, the reorganization of first year schedules and the purchase of equipment and study materials, specifically microscopes for teaching histology," said Jiří Ferda, vice-dean for general medicine.

The academic year 2019/2020 has already begun at Karolinum

16.09.2019 / Courses

The academic year 2019/2020 has already begun at all ILPS CU centres

Students were welcomed to their study at each centre and then also officially in the beautiful historical building of Karolinum, where together they sang the student anthem "Gaudeamus igitur".

They will certainly hear it again in a year during matriculation ceremonies at universities and then again in a few years at graduation ceremonies.

In order to do so, teachers and other employees of the ILPS CU centres will help them and students will certainly be preparing for lessons :-)

We believe that together we will "sail" through the new academic year, our young students will learn Czech, improve their professional knowledge, and make new friends!

For 10 years, we have been the only full member of ALTE in the Czech Republic

02.09.2019 / Attention!

Only the Institute of Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University meets the strict international standards of the Czech language examination

Prague, 29th August 2019 – The Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, Charles University, celebrates ten years of membership of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) at the end of August. As the only institution in the Czech Republic it can claim that its Czech Language Certificate Exam (CCE) has repeatedly met the strict conditions of the international language exam quality audit.

The Association of Language Testers in Europe – ALTE brings together language examiners who work to promote fair and accurate assessment of language competence in Europe and beyond. It was founded in 1989 and today has 34 full members representing 25 European languages. To get full membership, it is necessary to meet 17 common ALTE standards. The standards cover all phases of the foreign language testing process – creating tests, administration and logistics, evaluation, statistical analysis, and communication with exam users.

In the Czech Republic, all the conditions were met for the first time in 2009, when the Czech Language Certificate Exam (CCE) of the Institute of Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University (ILPS CU) passed the audit. The exam is intended for all applicants for whom Czech is not their mother tongue and who want or need to verify the level of their communication competence in Czech. These are mostly foreigners who plan to study at Czech universities, want to find a job in the Czech Republic, or want to obtain Czech citizenship.

"The exam verifies language skills at five levels – from the lowest level, A1, to the second highest, C1. For those interested, it is important that they can take the exam not only in Prague and Brno, but also at more than 15 locations abroad. For example, we test in Berlin, Kiev, London, Moscow, Warsaw, and Vienna, but also in Tokyo," says PhDr. Pavel Pečený, Head of the ILPS CU Research and Test Centre, whose team is developing the exam.

The ATLE international audit is not only a test of the professional quality of the exam, but also a guarantee of fair and reliable results. This is essential for a language examination of such high importance. For most candidates, passing the CCE exam is an important life step that determines their future destiny, i.e. whether they will fulfil their dream and be able to study or work in the Czech Republic.

ILPS CU also offers the CCE exam for youth. Pupils and students under 16 years of age can take the exam at levels A1 and A2, for example in the French Lyceum in Prague; abroad, the exam is regularly held in Weiden, Germany.

"Every year, we test students from Bavarian Realschule who study Czech as an optional subject. There is also another activity connected to CCE in Germany", adds Pečený. "In Weiden, apart from the youth, for several years now we have also been testing Bavarian police officers who study Czech as part of their professional development."

In addition to the CCE exam, ILPS CU is also developing the Czech Language Exam for the purpose of granting Czech citizenship, which it provides throughout the Czech Republic together with the Czech Life and Institutions Exam prepared by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Every year, nearly 3,000 candidates take the exam process. Thanks to its membership in ALTE, ILPS CU is the only university institution that can also provide the Examination of the Czech Language for Permanent Residence in the Czech Republic.

How many Czechs do you think live around the world outside the Czech Republic?

16.08.2019 / Courses

How many Czechs do you think live around the world outside the Czech Republic?

Around 2 million, i.e. every sixth Czech.

ILPS CU plays a big role in the development of an educational programme for expatriates.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic (MFA CR), the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic (MEYS CR), and the House of Foreign Cooperation (Dům zahraniční spolupráce, DZS), we organize a methodological course of Czech as a foreign language for teachers from expatriate communities and a Czech language summer course for expatriates.

This year, the summer course took place in Poděbrady for the first time (before it always took place in Dobruška). Interest in the course was huge as ever and we are pleased that many scholarship holders are returning to us as self-payers.

The end of this summer school and the presentation of certificates to the participants are traditionally held in the prestigious premises of Czernin Palace. On 15 August, students were welcomed by the Special Envoy for Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jiří Krátký, Director of the International Relations Department of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic Mgr. Ladislav Bánovec, DZS Deputy for Expatriate Affairs PaedDr. Olga Vlachová, and ILPS CU Deputy Director Ing. Michaela Šolcová. As always, the event was led by Mrs. Vlaďka Koreňová, the head of the summer course for expatriates. Summer school for expatriates is over, but we know for sure that next year we will meet again with many of its participants (some of them already for the twentieth time!)

See you next year!

Workshop with Jaromir Plachy-PC game author

10.08.2019 / Courses

The Czech computer game Chuchel spilled over the Czech Republic instantly and became a world classic.

In 2018 at the IGF Independent Games Awards in San Francisco the game won the first prize Excellence In Visual Art. The author of the game, Jaromir Plachy, considers it an animated grotesque which reminds the traditions of a Czech animated film.

At workshop with Jaromir Plachy our students got acquainted with the story of the character's creation (we'll reveal a secret: the author mixed his character with the character of his dog) and how the author changed Chuchel's appearance to be not accused of racism. At the end of a funny and interesting presentation, students got the opportunity to install this game on their laptops.

Students of the Summer School for Youth visited Prague castle

03.08.2019 / Courses

The curators of the Summer School for Youth tried to show and tell students not only about Prague events of old days, but they also told a lot about events of recent or quite recent history. The students were really interested in the story about the current president of the Czech Republic, and about its first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. In addition, during the tour of Prague Castle we got wet in the rainbow :-)

Podebrady Summer School ending...

30.07.2019 / Courses

The July summer schools in Prague and Podebrady finished on 26th July.

Last four weeks were so full of intensive Czech language classes, daily excursions, trips and other events that they flew completely unnoticed for all our students and teachers.

Parting with students of summer (and any other) courses is always a bit sad. But this is a great occasion to share experiences, exchange contacts and think about new meetings at our other summer schools.

By the way, one of them, "Czech language and Czech culture", begun on Monday, July 29, at Prague-Albertov center

Do not miss the chance to have a great in the next four weeks. In the meantime, see how the summer course in Podebrady ended.

Summech School of Slavic Languages is just perfect!

17.07.2019 / Courses

The ILPS CU Summer School students know much about the Czech Republic.
They came to Podebrady from many countries from all over the world, including our neighbours.
During the Czech Evening, students had learned not only about the geography of our country, but also about what the Czech Republic brought to the world in general.
In addition to interesting folk customs and traditional dishes, such as bohemian crystal, shoes, music and dance (students learned to dance mazurka and polka that evening), literature, scientific discoveries and of course beer!

A historian, beer blogger and brewer Michal Horáček held a lecture about the history of Czech brewing, then beer tasting followed it.

Dragon Race - Podebrady

31.05.2019 / Novinky z blogu

Do not miss the photo report from a unique event, which is traditionally held in Poděbrady.

Below is an excerpt from the Poděbrady centre blog. You can find the whole article and photos here.

"As every year, the ILPS students participated in the Dragon Boat Race "PODĚBRADSKÉ DRAČÍ SRDCE" (Poděbrady Dragon's Heart) for a Poděbrady challenge cup, which was held on 25 May 2019 at the Poděbrady lake. A twenty-member crew of students from all over the world trained well to compete with six other experienced racing teams. Each crew completed three 200-metre start races along the bank, and a 1000-metre race in which the ships circle the island in the middle of the lake.

The ILPS Poděbrady team took a beautiful 7th place in the 200m race as well as in the final 1000m race, and for their perseverance they earned a special reward – a Cup for the most likeable crew in the Dragon Race."

We are very happy that every year the students participate in large numbers!

Choose your exam date >>>

ATTENTION! Changes in the CCE Exam as of January 1, 2018

The changes in the CCE Exam are the result of revision and comparison of the tested skills (in the original Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension and Grammar/lexical test /only B2 and C1/) with how the individual levels are defined by external standards (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR) and the needs of the candidates who apply for the CCE Exam.

This led to the creation of a new exam structure, meaning in short what is tested in the exam and what the interpretation of the results pertains to. This new definition of the structure resulted in the new version of the subtests Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension and the Grammar/lexical test (only B2 and C1).

Workbook for most popular Czech language textbook just released

29.01.2016 / Attention!

"When I started with teaching of Czech as a foreign language, its methodology was still in its infancy. Obviously, it was the English language whose teaching was most developed back then, nevertheless, I was inspired by the German language thanks to its complex grammar structure." recalls PhDr. Zdena Malá, author of the Czech Step by Step 1 workbook, of the just released Czech Step by Step 2 workbook and director of the Prague-Krystal center of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of the Charles University in Prague in one person.

"I started to create additional exercises and activities for teaching of Czech as a foreign language, which would at least slightly resemble exercises from inspirational German textbooks. I was trying to focus on an interesting and creative form so that apart from the grammar rules also communication skills would be practiced. Soon after that I started to cooperate with an author of the most used Czech language textbooks, Dr. Lída Holá" adds PhDr. Malá.

The second part of the author's workbook brings additional exercises for the lessons 11-20 of the textbook Czech Step by Step 2 (Česky krok za krokem 2 / Tschechisch Schritt fur Schritt 2 / Чешский шаг за шагом 2). It offers a lot of activities for each lesson which serve for practicing of taught communication skills, vocabulary, and grammar and are accompanied by two-colored photographs and illustrations. The publication structure is similar to the one of the first part. For orientation there are marks right next to the exercises designating a corresponding page and exercise in the textbook. More difficult exercises exceeding the B1 level are marked with the plus sign and they are destined to be alternatively used by motivated students or for students who are native Slavic language speakers.

At the end of each lesson there is a page dedicated to spelling, this part is especially focused on i and y spelling which is very often incomprehensible for foreign students. Most exercises have solution given in the key at the end of the publication. Therefore, the workbook is appropriate for work in class, as well as for self-study.

The publication also offers a number of texts with tasks preparing students for the reading comprehension part of the Czech Language Certificate Exam at the B1 level or the Exam for Applicants for Permanent Residency, which takes place exclusively at the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of the Charles University in Prague. The whole series of the Czech Step by Step textbooks and workbooks is therefore a significant piece of work in the field of education.

An extract from the Lesson 1 of the workbook is freely available at:

European Day of Languages – 16 languages in one place!

Thursday, 25th September, was a perfect day for anyone who has ever, even for a few hours, dreamed of becoming a polyglot. It was a day when visitors to the European Day of Languages event, held at Prague's Lucerna Arcade, had a chance to explore 16 different languages! From 4pm until 7pm, each visitor had an opportunity to talk to native speakers and teachers of those languages.

Everyone who came enjoyed the event very much - they learned new words and some spoken language, and they were even given a small present from the teachers for making the effort:-).

Apart from the most widely spoken languages like English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, Czech language proved to be very popular among the event's foreign visitors. The Czech language section was led by the Prague-Albertov study centre's Eva Hlaváčková and Jana Nováková who were extremely busy right from the beginning – already at 4pm people lined up waiting to have their go, and the line never stopped growing. Mgr. Marie Poláčková, Director of Prague-Albertov centre, also joined the event and took part in the activities.

We are very happy about the fact that Czech language has proved to be no underdog among the world languages. On the contrary, many foreigners were attracted by the idea of discovering Czech and stopped by to 'chat' with our teachers. Besides having a nice language experience and taking small presents home, they could also learn about the Czech for Foreigners courses, taught at the Prague-Albertov centre.

The Lucerna Arcade was very busy, indeed, on that day. It was interesting to watch the kind of people who came to see the event – at first they were those people who knew about it from different advertisements and the Interent. But soon, many curious passers-by, who realized that this wasn't any celebrity autograph signing session but a chance for them to learn a few foreign words, phrases or just the alphabet in so many languages, also decided to wait in a line, without being discouraged by the crowds:-).

What is more, the visitors could take part in a contest and win 3 language courses of their choice as well as be included in a prize draw where they could win a book voucher or gift books, CDs or DVDs. The only thing they had to do was to take at least 3 mini-lessons, which appeared to have been an easy task because, this being a great opportunity for them to try and learn so many new languages in one place, most of the participants took more than 3 lessons:-).

Apart from the already mentioned languages, the visitors could also learn a bit of Basque, Bulgarian, Finnish, Galician, Lithuanian, Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Portugese and Romanian.

The day after the event, the Prague-Albertov centre held an Open Day event within the European Day of Languages where the visitors could take 3 Czech lessons free of charge.

Not for nothing do we say that THE MORE LANGUAGES YOU KNOW, THE MORE TIMES YOU ARE A HUMAN. And how many languages do you know?

Don't think twice and pick a course from our great selection:-)

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY!

24.03.2014 / Courses

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY in the centre of Prague- Albertov !

A new and original form of studying in presented to students of the Prague centre- Albertov. Every Wednesday the cultural centre organizes an afternoon with interesting programs. In early March, the centre held a „Cultural Wednesday" focused on KH Mach and Czech literature. Next Wednesday, students will have the opportunity to see the Czech film „Kuky returns" (cinema MAT) .

I had the opportunity to attend a "Cultural Wednesday"  last week ( 19.03 ) . First, the students gathered in the auditorium of the Centre Albertov and then they went on a sightseeing walk through the center of Prague.

In the auditorium, a pleasant teacher passed out texts to all the students, all about the Old Town Clock (of course in Czech ) and everyone tried to understand the articles . The articles then were read aloud and subsequently translated. However, do not think that it was a mere reading comprehension - not at all, no boring hours. The young teacher explained the problematic terms and complemented them with various other examples from everyday life.  Each explanation was accompanied by what would say was a theatrical performance, so that students not only learned new words, but also had fun doing it. On behalf of all the students I would like to thank the young teacher!

In the Powder Tower, the students were divided into groups and were accompanied by students from the Travel and Tourism High School, all conversations were in English, Russian and Spanish. Students from the Russian group (students from Russia and Ukraine) greatly helped the Czech students from the first to third year who had a bit of trouble with the Russian language.  It was nice to see how all the students were able to overcome the language barrier. I even witnessed a lovely exchange of emails that two students passed between themselves in order to meet again and tutor each other in the foreign language.

If I have a little time, I'm sure I will be more than happy to attend another "Cultural Wednesday" in the centre Prague- Albertov. We got along together greatly and had a lot of fun. Moreover, I've seen with my own eyes how learning can be fun at the Centre.

COME TO LEARN CZECH - LEARNING THROUGH PLAY is here for you!

From 1st March, we offer to our students (aged 17-26) also a new and unique type of insurance of the PVZP company  - EXCLUSIVE  comprehensive health insurance.

This type of insurance is the first of its kind on the Czech market and can be arranged for at least 12 months.  In contrast to other types of health insurance, the EXCLUSIVE insurance does not have any exceptions, which means that the range of services it covers fully corresponds to public health insurance of Czech citizens – the insurance company covers expenditures on health care in the same way as it does to Czech citizens.

The PVZP insurance company provides its clients with medical care in more than 4500 medical facilities. The total limit for insurance claims is unlimited, maximal limit for a single claim is 3 million CZK.
